CHAPTER 1：赤毛の依頼人
I visited my friend, Sherlock Holmes, one afternoon last year. I found him talking with an older man who had bright red hair. Holmes was happy to see me and asked me to stay. He said this man, Mr. Jabez Wilson, had a strange story. Holmes knew I enjoy unusual problems, so he asked Mr. Wilson to begin again.
Mr. Wilson owned a small store where he lent money on items. He had a helper named Vincent Spaulding, who worked for little pay. One day, Spaulding showed Mr. Wilson an advertisement for the Redheaded League. This group paid good money each week to a man with red hair, for light work. Mr. Wilson was excited and went to apply. That was how his odd adventure began.

Many red-haired men came to the office in the advertisement. Mr. Wilson was chosen because his hair was very bright red. A man named Duncan Ross tested Mr. Wilson by pulling his hair to see if it was real. Then he told Mr. Wilson he would earn four pounds a week but must work from ten until two each day. If he left the office, he would lose his position forever.
His job was to copy from the Encyclopedia Britannica. He sat in a small room and copied page after page. At first, Duncan Ross checked on him, but soon he stopped visiting. Mr. Wilson did this for eight weeks. Suddenly, one day, he arrived and found a note on the door: the Redheaded League was dissolved. Mr. Wilson felt tricked and upset.
広告にあったオフィスには、赤毛の男性が大勢押し寄せていました。しかし最終的に選ばれたのは、非常に鮮やかな赤い髪を持つウィルスン氏でした。そこにいたダンカン・ロスという男性は、ウィルスン氏の頭髪を実際に引っ張って偽物ではないか確かめました。合格すると、ウィルスン氏は週に4ポンドの給料をもらい、毎日午前10時から午後2時まで勤務しなければならないと言われました。一度でも部屋を離れたら、その職を失うことになるという厳しい条件でした。

CHAPTER 3：ホームズ、事件を嗅ぎ取る
With no answers, Mr. Wilson asked Holmes for help. Holmes said Mr. Wilson had not really lost anything: he had earned extra money and learned new information by copying. Still, Mr. Wilson wanted the truth. Holmes asked about Vincent Spaulding. Mr. Wilson said he was short, quick, had no hair on his face, and had a white mark on his forehead.
Holmes looked excited. He asked if Spaulding had ears pierced. Mr. Wilson said yes, from his youth. Holmes seemed sure this person was no normal helper. After Mr. Wilson left, Holmes told me there was a deep plan behind this. He said the helper was dangerous and used a not real name. But we needed proof. Holmes asked me not to speak while he thought, calling it a “three-pipe problem.”

Later, Holmes took me to see Mr. Wilson’s store at Saxe-Coburg Square in London. The street was quiet and old. The building had a sign with Mr. Wilson’s name. Holmes tapped the pavement with his stick. Then he knocked on the door. Vincent Spaulding opened it. Holmes asked for directions, then left. He said he wanted to look at Spaulding’s trousers. They were worn at the knees, which meant he might have been working on his knees, maybe digging.
Holmes led me around the corner. We saw a busy road with a large bank. Holmes said he believed they dug an underground path from Mr. Wilson’s store to that bank. If correct, it was a plan to rob the bank. He guessed they would do it soon.

That night at ten, I went to Baker Street with my gun, as Holmes asked. I found Holmes with Mr. Merryweather and Mr. Jones from Scotland Yard. Holmes said they were going to the bank because a big crime was planned. The criminal was John Clay, a very smart thief who had done many bad acts. Holmes said we must move fast.
We rode in cabs to a side door of the bank. Mr. Merryweather led us below the ground to a large room. He explained there was much gold stored there. Holmes believed Clay and his friend would break in from below to steal it. We waited in the dark, ready to stop them.

CHAPTER 6：罠を張る探偵たち
Time passed slowly. Suddenly, one stone in the floor moved, and a hand appeared. A young man came up. He had pale skin and bright red hair. Another man tried to follow. Holmes jumped forward and grabbed the first man by the back of his shirt. Mr. Jones reached for the second man, but he slipped down again. The first man pointed a gun, but Holmes hit his wrist with a stick, and the gun fell.
This prisoner was John Clay. He smiled and said his partner probably got away. But Holmes said police were waiting at the store entrance. Clay made fun of us in a polite way. Mr. Jones put cuffs on him and took him away. Holmes, Mr. Merryweather, and I followed. Mr. Merryweather thanked Holmes for saving the bank’s gold.
暗闇のなか、時間が長く感じられました。やがて床の石が動き、ひとつの大きな石が持ち上がります。そこから若い男が顔を出しました。彼は赤い髪で、もう一人を引き上げようとしているようでした。その瞬間、ホームズは飛びかかって男の襟首をつかみました。もう一人は穴に戻ろうとしましたが、ジョーンズ氏が服をつかみ、銃を抜こうとしたところをホームズが鞭のような棒で打ち落としました。

CHAPTER 7：穴から現れた男
Back at Baker Street, Holmes explained the plan. The Redheaded League was a trick to keep Mr. Wilson away from his store. Vincent Spaulding used that time to make an underground path from the store to the bank. When the Redheaded League was suddenly dissolved, it meant the plan was ready. They would enter the bank on a Saturday night, so they would have the weekend to escape.
Holmes discovered that Spaulding was really John Clay, a well-known criminal. The red hair idea was clever. Four pounds a week was small compared to the gold they planned to take. By noticing the bank next to Mr. Wilson’s store, Holmes understood the true target. He told Scotland Yard and called Mr. Merryweather. Then we set our trap.

I said Holmes solved it perfectly. He lifted his shoulders and said these problems keep his mind active. He was happy to protect the bank and help Mr. Wilson. Now that John Clay was caught, the danger was over.
So ended the strange story of the Redheaded League. Sherlock Holmes showed again that his mind was strong and quick. I, Dr. Watson, wrote this so people might enjoy such a case. Although paying a man to copy from the Encyclopedia Britannica seemed silly, it hid a serious crime. Thanks to Holmes, that plan failed. He noticed the worn knees, the busy helper, and the store beside the bank. That is how we stopped the robbery.
私が「見事な推理だ」とほめると、ホームズは肩をすくめ、「こうした事件のおかげで頭が退屈せずに済む」と答えました。彼は、人々を守ることは意義があるとは言いつつも、こうした難事件を解くこと自体が自分の活力になると感じているようです。ともかく今回、ジョン・クレイの犯罪計画は失敗に終わり、ウィルスン氏の損害も防ぐことができました。
赤毛の髪を利用するという珍妙な策略でしたが、その真の目的は大金を強奪すること。ホームズは、店の助手の膝の擦り切れと店の隣にある銀行を結びつけることで、犯行を見抜いたのです。
CHAPTER 9：事件の終結と探偵の余韻
Later, Holmes leaned back in his chair. He said, “Life is often simple, but these mysteries bring light to my days.” I thanked him for this case. He said, “We stopped a crime. Now, we wait for the next one.” And so we ended another adventure with Sherlock Holmes.
その後、ホームズは椅子にもたれて、「人生は単純なことが多いが、こういった謎のおかげで日々が楽しくなる」と言いました。私は今回の事件の詳細を記録して感謝を伝えました。ホームズは「銀行も守れたし、事件も終わった。あとは次の機会を待つだけさ」と、いつも通りの落ち着いた様子です。
